The purpose of family allowance is to partly cover the expences of having a child. You can be paid child benefit from the month following the child’s birth, or the month after your arrival in Norway with the child. If the child is born in Norway after you have registered in the National Register, family allowance is granted automatically. Family allowance is granted until the month before the child turns 18. If you are a single parent, you may, on certain conditions, be entitled to family allowance for one more child than you actually have.
Citizens of EEA countries who work in Norway while their families remain in their home country may be entitled to family allowance pursuant to special regulations.
