If you have come to Norway from a non-EU/EEA country to work, you must complete 300 hours of tuition in the Norwegian language. The tuition is not free, i.e. you must pay for it yourself. The purpose of the scheme is to ensure that everyone who can be granted permanent residence in Norway has basic knowledge of the Norwegian language and of Norwegian society.
The obligation to participate applies to everyone between the ages of 16 and 55. Persons between the ages of 55 and 67 may participate in the tuition if they wish to do so, but it is not mandatory.
If you hold a residence permit pursuant to the EEA regulations or if you are citizen of one of the Nordic countries, the tuition is not mandatory. If you wish to participate in the tuition, you must pay for it yourself.
