An electronic ID is a proof of identity that confirms who you are. Electronic ID provides you with secure access to public and private services online.

You must have a Norwegian identity number (national identity number or D-number) to obtain an electronic ID. Electronic ID allows you to

  • submit applications
  • view and submit your tax return
  • log in to online banking
  • sign contracts

There are several types of electronic ID: The two most common are MinID and BankID.

MinID

MinID allows you to log in to public services online. To obtain a MinID, you must first request an activation letter. It will take a few days for it to arrive by post to the address you have registered with the Norwegian Tax Administration. Once you have received the activation letter, you must follow the instructions provided.

BankID

BankID can be used to access all Norwegian banks and public services online. To obtain a BankID, you must contact your bank. Once you have activated your BankID, you can start using it.

What if you don’t have an identity number?

You must have a Norwegian identity number (national identity number or D-number) to obtain an electronic ID.

  • If you are from a country in the EU/EEA, you will receive an identity number when you apply for a tax deduction card.
  • If you are from a country outside of the EU/EEA, you will receive an identity number when you have been granted a residence permit.

Take good care of your electronic ID

Keep your login information private – it is for you alone. When you use electronic ID, you must confirm your identity with a unique code or a password, often in combination with a one-time code. Do not share this information with your employer, friends or anyone else. If others gain access to your electronic ID, they may misuse it. For example, they could buy goods, take out a loan or enter into agreements in your name.
