Who is eligible for Norwegian language tuition?

For how long can you participate?
The number of years you went to school in your home country determines how long you are eligible for free Norwegian language tuition. If you move to another municipality, you retain the right to tuition in Norwegian. If you are granted leave from your tuition, your right to tuition will be extended by the corresponding period.
You are entitled to Norwegian language tuition even if you don’t participate in the Introduction Programme. In some cases, the right to Norwegian language tuition lasts longer than the Introduction Programme, and you can continue Norwegian language tuition even if you have completed the Introduction Programme and have found a job.
Why do you need to take part in tuition?
Norwegian language tuition will help you to achieve a language level that will enable you to start working.
Participants in the Introduction Programme also have an obligation to complete Norwegian language tuition and to take a final test in Norwegian. It is important that you fulfil this obligation if you are going to apply for a permanent residence permit at a later date.
What do you learn?
You learn to read, write and speak Norwegian as part of your Norwegian language tuition. This means that you get to know words and concepts that you need as part of Norwegian working life.
Norwegian language tuition can take place in a classroom, but also in the context of a work placement or workplace. The tuition will prepare you to participate in any further training, education, work and community life.
How is your learning documented?
After you have completed your Norwegian language tuition, you must take a Norwegian language test. The municipality will offer the test for free. You have the right to a free test for each of the following skills: writing, reading, listening, and speaking.
